About

PAINTING: Buster paints in oils, water color and mixed media. Sculpts in wood. A pioneer of photo- luminescence or ‘dark art’ applied to various cosmic scenes. His attitude to painting is that it’s the overall effect of the picture or canvass that counts, as opposed to accuracy of the subject. This opens up immense creative possibilities providing a sense of freedom to create as opposed to being restricted to conform. He approaches each work as an ‘experiment’. In his opinion, ‘often failing’. The profile encourages discussion plus diverse opinions and inconvenient and objective truths relating to politics, the social condition, the arts, activities and business.

Cosmic artist and master of the art of the dark.

Aluminum oxide (coloured), silicon carbide (black), pigments flown in from Germany, China, pure gold dust, polymer colorants, are a few of the materials Buster Petersen uses toward obtaining his unique and intriguing effects. Combine a working knowledge of chemistry and a mineralogist mixed with some artistic endeavor and you have a whole new genre of pictorial art appearing. Enter “dark-art”.
The art of Buster Petersen.

Petersen did not invent this medium (photoluminescence) but he may well be amongst the first to have deliberately created a painting that
works in the light and in the dark.

“Dark-art” is the art of creating a painting or work of art that will respond to dark as opposed to or in addition to light. Buster Petersen’s paintings have one image in normal lighting and completely transform into another image in the ‘dark’. They come to life in the dark. Sometimes displaying an extended message of the ‘daylight’ picture and sometimes displaying a
completely different picture with no resemblance at all.

Petersen’s’ themes include nature, The Cape, a portrait collection of jazz greats, extra sensory imaging, Namibia, Neanderthals, but mostly cosmic scenes. Buster Petersen has introduced a new dimension if only that he has skillfully provided an artistic response in the dark that both extends the message and enhances the visual beauty of the painting.

WRITING: Buster often chooses to write under a pseudonym – to escape the automatic and in built prejudices of most readers. He argues that opinions and attitudes are often informed by the pre-knowledge and therefore pre-judgment of the ‘writer’ to the detriment of the strength of the argument.
